Hi,

User Interface design is not trivial, especially when one wants to include all the necessary options, yet would like to remain as obvious as possible.

I’ve designed a dialog for setting a number of export settings, that are in my opinion useful and necessary, but I guess these would be a little overwhelming for the beginner, and for anyone who does not have an absolutely specific opinion about what he would like to have.

One option would be to provide a fixed number of defaults, for common formats, and handle the not so obvious parameters inside. However, I do not like this approach, because stuff like the Analog Blank could have a little impact on the result, that could irritate the casual user, and he would have some trouble to find out why that happens.

And sooner or later there will be someone who would want to tweak all those little knobs, because he knows what he is doing, and feels limited by the applications defaults.

I guess I will continue to try out different approaches and layouts, until I get one that I like.

Have fun,
-Richard

I agree that good defaults are essential. If someone wants to change these defaults they could do so by clicking an “advanced” button which would open a menu showing all those options that a first time user would not want to see (similar to the “options” button next to the video and audio codec box).
